I DO read tragedies
every once in a while....Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.comBlogger46125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-14195252533223687502013-04-26T10:16:00.002-07:002013-04-26T10:16:15.997-07:00Anything by Michael Baron
What would you do if you had the opportunity to go back in time and save the love of your life from experiencing pain? You would do it, right? Even if it meant altering time and your relationship? Even if it meant never meeting her? That's the choice our heroine is plagued with.

Anything is both heartwarming and heart wrenching as we follow our heroine on his journey. Michael Baron really has a way with words. He sucks you in with his beautiful jargon. You could literally feel the pain and heartbreak radiating off the pages. A story of love and letting go, I give Anything five out five stars.Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-1124641312849131482012-03-03T20:57:00.001-08:002012-03-03T20:57:57.247-08:00The Alchemy of Forever by Avery Williams

Summary: Can we ever really escape our past? Especially when we have all the time in the world for it to catch up to us?

Seraphina was just a young girl when her life was taken from her. When a handsome young man called Cyrus offers her eternal life, she takes it. But centuries later, she's tired of living. She makes a plan to commit suicide, but when things don't go as planned, she ends up stuck in someone else's body. As she plots her second suicide attempt, she grows attached to her home's (aka the body she occupies) friends and family, and discovers that she may want to live. Still, she knows that she cannot go on living inside of someone else's body, living someone else's life, even when throwing away that someone else's life means throwing away her only chance at love. But will Cyrus ever let her go?

My Thoughts: Okay, what the hell kind of ending was that?? If you-know-who took over you-know-who's body then I'm not reading book two. This really sucks and I want to cry....See, this is what happens when you live vicariously through fictional characters: you feel there fictional pain. My night is ruined....grrr! BUT, I can't deny that, up until the last page, I enjoyed reading this. I thought the plot was pretty original and the writing wasn't horrible.

When I first noticed this book on Goodreads, I paid no attention to the title or the description. I only had eyes for the author's name: Jennifer Echols. Jennifer Echols is a big deal to me when it comes to the YA romance genre. So, when I saw that she authored this novel I just knew it was going to be good. No, let me rephrase that: I just assumed it was going to be good. And we all know what happens when we assume.

For a YA novel published in 2011 (sorry to say, but the standards for a good YA novel these days have lowered tremendously), it wasn't horrible. I even enjoyed it a bit. But, for a YA novel written by Jennifer Echols? Bleh. The ending was cheese (and I'm not talking cute cheese, I'm talking If I Have A Wicked Stepmother Where's My Prince cheese) and felt kind of rushed. Now, this is just my opinion. You really have to see for yourself. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. If you really just have to read a book about a girl lusting after her best friend's boyfriend while said best friend turns out to be a rhymes-with-witch, then I would recommend Something Like Fate (Susane Colasanti) or The Unwritten Rule (Elizabeth Scott) or even Sometimes it Happens (Lauren Barnholdt....and we all know I don't have too high an opinion of her writing, so that's saying something). My point is that since there are plenty more novels out there with similar story lines, you can skip this one.

Oh but wait! There was one thing I liked about this novel: the main character's journey from overweight to healthy. Although we don't get to actually witness this journey, we do get to see the before and after. Her weight was an important part of the story, and it was a part that I liked and could relate to. That part alone was enough to give this two stars, but not enough to make me like this novel. The bad outweighed the good. Echols needs to step up her game and quit slacking!

Looks like someone in the YA business decided to step up their game. I loved the originality, and the ending. But I hate cliffhangers :/ The heroine kind of puts me in the mind of Rogue from X-Men (the movies, as I'm well aware that the comics differed greatly even though I didn't read them). And I LOVED Noah (although I can't stop thinking about The Notebook when I see his name). I cannot wait until next year! Oh, and do you wanna know the twist at the end? Well too bad! ;p
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-55597480773559402172011-12-10T20:38:00.001-08:002011-12-10T20:39:51.197-08:00Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

It was a bit too cheesy at times. I think Abbi Glines needs to stick to writing from the female's point of view because she hasn't got a clue how guys think and talk. Not sure whether or not you know this about me, but I'm a closet perv and sucker for (well written) smut. This is the best book that I've read in a long time. It's rare that I find a good book these days, and I really lucked up when I received this one in the Galley Grab newsletter. Now of course, I didn't just jump into this right away, because that just wouldn't be me. No, I had to read the Goodreads reviews first. From the few reviews that I found, I discovered that there weren't really many fans of this book. Personally, I didn't see the problem. I mean the story line was...imaginative? I don't know if there really is a word to describe it, but what I do know is that for supernatural novel it was highly original and I could tell that Molly Cochran really did her research. The characters were lovable enough. The romance wasn't built plainly on lust disguised as love like most YA Romance novels these days (although I can't say that I would mind much if it was...pervert? Guilty as charged. ;D). The writing was just beautiful. It had substance, and meaning, which is what a lot of today's paranormal romance novels lack these days. I will admit that a few of the situations and reactions were a tad bit unrealistic, but it is fiction after all. Supernatural fiction, at that. Overall, it was a finely crafted novel and I didn't regret the time spent reading it after I finished it. So yeah, I seriously don't see where all the negative opinions about this came from. I mean, like I said, they're opinions. If you want to hate this novel, then that's your prerogative, but I just want to understand why so many people hated it. Or am I exaggerating? Or maybe the only reason I didn't hate it was because I had lowered my expectations after reading the bad reviews? Maybe...
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-73594365309040554072011-08-16T20:23:00.000-07:002011-08-16T20:23:12.209-07:00It's A List!: The Next Book in That Series You Love (YA Novels 2011-2012)

1. Life has just been so busy! I feel horrible about breaking my promise (again!) on the books I was to review. So, I think I'm going to do away with Coming Soon lists, as I've proven to be unreliable. I don't want to make anymore promises I can't keep, so from now on I'm going to have a "What's Hot" list instead of "Coming Soon" lists, if that's alright with you guys.
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-69826041116293513562011-06-09T12:16:00.000-07:002011-06-09T12:16:27.354-07:00Hex Hall Series: Book 1 and 2 by Rachel Hawkins

Before I read this series, I was pretty much turned off the whole paranormal romance thing, because there are just too many of them, and the monotony is killing me. It's rare that you're find a normal normal YA romance novel these days. But it's not just that. That's not the reason why I'm turned off of the genre. It's mainly because they're all the same. The same mythical creatures, the same story formulas.

But, this one was different, which is why I absolutely loved it. So many twists and turns. It just really kept me guessing.

The only thing I didn't like was it's blatant similarities to the Evernight Series. And don't tell me that you've read both series and didn't notice! Think about it: girl goes to school designed to train and help [insert mythical creature here] control their powers, girl meets boy at the aforementioned school, girl and boy fall in love/like, girl discovers that boy is actually a member of a secret organization devoted to hunting and killing [insert mythical creature here], boy flees school, girl is forbidden to see boy, boy and girl can't stay away from each other and end up sneaking out to see each other, girl and boy are discovered by [insert name of third (male) member of love triangle here] but he is so in love with girl that he agrees to keep their secret.

So, as you can see, the Hex Hall series had quite a few similarities. But, hex Hall is also very different from Evernight. The Demon/Witch thing was the biggest difference, and while I'm usually opposed to books that contain demonic characters (lie), it was one of the main reasons I loved this series so much. I seriously cannot wait for book three. Demon Glass left on on sort of a cliffhanger. And, it has me really confused on who Sophie should choose. It's like an Edward vs. Jacob thing, except it's Archer vs. Cal. She loves Archer more, but Cal is better for her. Why? Well, let's see here: he's noble, smart, sexy..... But then again, isn't Archer all of those things, too. Well, Cal has something that Archer doesn't--or, more accurately, Archer is something that Cal is not: he's a member of The Eye.

I have to say that this book was not at all what I expected....well okay, maybe it was a little bit like I expected. But, it really surprised me. Now before I elaborate, let me just say that I was reluctant to read this book. Why? Well it may have had something to do with the fact that I was kind of angry at Ally Carter for abandoning Gallagher Girls (not literally) and starting a whole new series. And not to mention that the last book left us on a serious cliffhanger! But, I'm not here to talk about Gallagher Girls, I'm here to talk about Heist Society, so where was I? Oh yes, my reluctance to read it? Another reason I didn't want to read it was because a few of my friends had already read it and had told me that it was seriously lacking in the romance department...and we all know that I don't read anything that does not contain romance willingly. But, I decided to give it a try anyway, since it was Ally Carter (whom I adore).

And what do ya' know? My friends were wrong! Which is why it surprised me. While there wasn't really any of that kissing-I love you, and we're so meant to be together-going out on dates-stuff, there was quite a bit of that will they-or won't they-stuff. Between Hale and Kat, that is. And, there was a mini love triangle (for like a millisecond), but we won't get into that.

What I loved about this book was not just the romance, but also the action, the adventure, the mystery, the heist. I felt like I was watching a movie while reading this. The characters were awesome and I fell in love with Hale not just once, but twice! Heist Society was brilliantly written and I know Ally Carter must have done loads of research...either that or she herself is secretly a part of a heist society...but I'm pretty sure it's the former. The way she told the story is what really just kept me going, kept me wanting more. I'm not usually a fan of stories told in the third person (which I will elaborate on at a later date), but I absolutely loved this one.

I cannot wait for the Book 2, Uncommon Criminals, to come out (hopefully I can find an ARC or Galley before then). Ally Carter really outdid herself this time. This one deserves five stars.

Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-42801693529839209112011-05-29T14:03:00.000-07:002011-05-29T14:03:11.682-07:00Stylish Blogger Award!

Kristan Higgins has done it again in this story of lost-and-found love. Harper was barely twenty-one when she married Nick Lowery, and barely twenty-two when she divorced him. And now, after almost twelve years, Harper and Nick see each other again for the first time at the wedding of her stepbrother, Willa, and his half brother, Chris.

Nick has always known that Harper was the love of his life, since the moment he met her. And, Harper knows she loves Nick. But, her tough exterior and cynical way of thinking won't let her be with him, not to mention her twenty year old abandonment issues that continuously cloud her mind.

When they meet again at the wedding, Harper brings along her firefighter handsome (and he doesn't just look like a firefighter; he is a firefighter) boyfriend of two years, Dennis. She is all set for him to propose to her, having given him an ultimatum a few days before. At least she was until she laid eyes on Nick, as gorgeous as ever.

After twelve years, she thought that she would be completely over him. But,as she soon realizes, she's not over him. And, when a chance happening lands them on a Dennis-free road trip together, Harper finds out just how not over him she is.

I got this book in a Goodreads giveaway the other day, and I was so excited to read it! I must say that I absolutely loved it! The writing was great, the characters were lovable (even Dennis) and the story line was rather entertaining. How many stars? 4/5

I don't have much to say about this one....it was "okay".....It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great, either. I waited a little longer than forever to read this book, and I have to say that I'm kind of disappointed. My faith in Lauren Barnholdt's writing is diminishing little by little.

While the story line is semi-original (and I say "semi" because, don't tell me this doesn't remind you of the movie 21??), the characters were bleh. The ending was okay, I guess. Nothing special. I'll have to give it 3/5 stars.

Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-43138176842518944622011-05-17T20:55:00.000-07:002011-05-19T22:58:17.855-07:00Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

A heart wrenching novel about a brother and sister who fall in love...with each other. Told from alternating points of view, Forbidden is both poignant and vivid in it's details. In a society where incest is not only socially unacceptable, but illegal, Lochan and Maya battle feelings of guilt and indignation. Maya and Lochie were born only a year (or less?) apart, so they've been each other's everything for as long as they can remember. They share opposing parenting roles in the lives of their younger siblings, filling in for a careless and selfish alcoholic of a mother. So, it's only natural that they would fall in love, right?

Throughout this book, I found myself experiencing feelings of repulsion, empathy and anger. Repulsion because of their monstrosity of a relationship, and empathy and anger at the hand they had been dealt in life , not to mention the denial of their one happiness: being together. I honestly felt like they both lived horrible lives and if being together was going to make their horrible lives less horrible, then they deserved to be together. They were good, hardworking people. They took on the responsibility of caring for several small children while they themselves were still children and still went to school. But alas, the people who deserve happiness the most rarely ever get it. I guess that's just life.

I'd recommend this book to people with strong stomachs, good imaginations, and/or open minds. If you have neither of these things, then I recommend that you skip this one. Overall, I'd have to give this one 4 stars. I'd have given it 5 if not for the *spoiler alert* sad ending...

A fairly predictable read. Not much else to say about it......this was one of those books where everything tied up just a little too neatly at the end to be considered realistic. I will admit that it was cute.... and I liked how it was partly a love story and partly an empowering novel about self confidence and learning to love yourself just the way you are (although I felt like a little more time could have been spent on the latter issue).
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-25068990069810861252011-04-22T22:47:00.000-07:002011-04-22T22:50:48.020-07:00Ransom my Heart by Meg Cabot *For Mature Audiences*

One thing that surprised me about this book was the number of [descriptive] sex scenes it contained. When I picked this one up, I was unaware that this was one of Meg Cabot's adult books. It was linked to the Princess Diaries series, after all. So, you can imagine the shock I was in when I read this, not to mention the excitement. This one is definitely for more mature audiences, that's for sure. The love making scenes will make you melt on the inside. I give the sex scenes alone five stars

This is one of my favorite books by Meg Cabot. When I finished this book, I almost pulled my hair out. That's how impatient I was for the next book to come out. I have to say that all though Conrad was a jerk in this one, I was still disappointed when she ended up with Jeremiah. Which sucks, because Jeremiah deserved her more than Conrad. But, I found it pretty hard to deny that my--I mean Belly's--feelings for Conrad were pretty strong. I also couldn't ignore the gentle and loving way Conrad treated Belly during her flashbacks of their brief time as a couple, although he was prone to letting her down. His love for her seemed at first "hot and cold", to the point where it seemed to deteriorate little by little. Of course, us hopeless romantics (and Team Conrad members) were able to see right through his act. We knew that he was just hurting inside (as anyone who'd just experienced the lost of a parent should have been).

Especially with chapter's from his POV popping up everywhere and hitting you in the face. Which is why this novel drew some conflicting feelings and overall confusion from it's readers, thus resulting in my near temporary insanity and impatience for the next book.

So, for the next few days I will be reviewing my favorite books, one after one. You don't have to read the reviews if you don't want to, but I really do enjoy commentary. How about a comment telling me what your favorite book is? Maybe I'll review....or maybe I already have. Okay, much love to my readers. <3
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-52059379825425695832011-04-15T13:14:00.000-07:002011-05-17T21:52:53.841-07:00The Next Best Thing by Kristan Higgins

It's been almost six years since Lucy's husband, Jimmy, died in a car accident. It's been about three years since Lucy and Jimmy's younger brother Ethan's relationship turned from "best friends" to "friends with benefits". It's been only a few hours since Lucy's little sister Corrinne delivered a healthy baby girl. That's when Lucy realizes she's missing something--and that something is not just Jimmy, either. It's a baby. And then she decides that she needs to get back out there, get on that horse again and find a husband. So of course, that means breaking up with Ethan--not that they were ever really "together" in the first place. Ethan is, of course, definitely not someone she should marry. He's someone that she knows she could love, if she'd just let herself. But, she can't do that. He could die and she'd be broken all over again. She needs a man who is bearable to live with, who would make a great father--much like Ethan--, and who is not too lovable. But, to do this, she first has to let go of Jimmy.

I knew this was going to be a good one from the moment I read the summary. I mean think about it: a book about a widow who has a less than appropriate relationship with her dead husband's brother? Don't tell me that doesn't sound interesting to you.

Now, I believe that those of us who aren't stupid will have predicted the ending of this one before the end of the second chapter. This is the first novel that I've read by Kristan Higgins, although I've seen her books on plenty of shelves in plenty of stores before. I think I'll have to give the rest of her books a try. Let's hope they're as good as this one.
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2164571634168053700.post-52215742283741257002011-04-12T17:25:00.000-07:002011-04-22T22:55:33.656-07:00An Apology to My Readers

Okay, so I feel really bad about not posting for so long. But, my life has been so hectic lately. I haven't been in the right state of mind to comprehend any new books and write any reviews. Another reason I haven't been posting: there's a slight problem with the rest of the books that are left on the Coming Soon list. I don't currently have access to Adobe Digital Editions, which is the program I use to view/read my eGalley's or ARCs.

However, I will be posting reviews soon, just not for the remaining books on the list. I will get around to reading/reviewing them, but not now.

Anyway, I'm really sorry. I just hate breaking promises. Much love to you all. <3
Vonnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12037263959059886128noreply@blogger.com0
